Fun and Under 21

There’s no reason why you can’t have fun at night in Austin, even downtown, if you’re not of legal drinking age. There are a number of clubs that are 18+ at least several nights of the week, if not all the time. Most of them are gay and/or lesbian clubs, but they’re good spots to go to if you want to dance.

Alexandria Longville, a sophomore majoring in sociology at the University of Texas, recommended Kiss & Fly for Friday and Saturday nights. On Thursday nights, she said she has attended the amateur male strip-off contests at Rain on 4th. There are cash prizes and lots of college students usually in attendance, Longville said, “and if you don’t like the strip-off, you can still dance.”

Kiss & Fly is open Wednesdays through Sundays and is 18+ every day. Cover is $10 every night except for Saturday (when it’s $20) for those under 21, and the club is open until 3:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Rain on 4th is 18+ Wednesdays through Fridays.

Of the non-gay clubs, Longville recommended Karma. It has “really good energy, everyone’s dancing, [and] there’s just a good vibe.” The club is 18+ Tuesdays through Thursdays (with cover at $3, $5, and free, respectively, for everyone under 21) and on select weekends.

  1. A couple of my friends have gone to Rain and told me it’s a great place to go for dancing. Even though I frequent bars on 6th street now that I’m 21, I find that it’s a lot harder to really dance in any of these places. I think I might just try out one of these clubs, just so that I can avoid packed bars and actually be able to dance!

I went to plenty clubs downtown when I was under 21. The trick is to join, or be in the know, with UT organizations that hold fundraisers or events there. Whenever UT orgs host anything downtown it’s almost always guaranteed to be 18+.

  3. This would have been a really helpful post before I turned 21. LOVE Rain and Kiss & Fly, they always have great music and, on a completely different motivation, I don’t have to worry about getting hit on relentlessly.
