Austin is a city big on biking and being green, and the month of May has been deemed National Bike Month across the country. Austin has a growing bicycling network, and to acknowledge the month of May, the city has set the week of May 16-20 as Austin Bike to Work Week.
You can take the time leading up to the 16th as time to prep. Replace a few short trips to the corner market or book store with a bike trip. On the 20th, Austin will have several “free food stations” set up for those participating in the ‘bike to work’ event. What else can be said to make you want to participate in this event? Despite the fact that gas is reaching almost $4/gallon, bicycling uses a better fuel: the averaged-sized person can burn 300-500 calories per hour riding a bicycle.
I’d much rather get in shape on my way to work, than deal with Austin traffic!
